Flakpanzer auf Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf. A

Model by Brian Bocchino

The Flakpanzer I Ausf. A is an extremely rare variant of the Panzer I Ausf. A, with only 24 having been produced. All of the flakpanzers produced were issued to the 614 Infantry Battalion, Motorized. This unit served in the East and was one of the many German units to meet its demise at Stalingrad. As with the self- propelled anti-aircraft vehicles of many combatants, the Flakpanzer I was used in an anti-infantry role as well as the anti-aircraft role.

The flak section consisted of three companies of platoons each. First and second platoon consisted of four Flakpanzer I Ausf A and four Munitionspanzer I. Third platoon consisted of two towed (truck) Flakvierling. First and Third Companies utilized a Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf. A as a command vehicle, while Second company used a Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf. B. The German cross typically appeared on the left and right folding sides of the vehicle, and the Flakpanzers were numbered 1 to 8. Apparently the platoons were also differentiated by color with first platoon using white, second platoon using red, and third platoon using yellow. Headquarters units are reported to have used green.
