12.8cm Selbstfahrlafette L/61 (Panzerselbstfahrlafette V)

With the abandonment of the VK3001 project, several copies of the Henschel prototype were on-hand. The Waffenamt therefore requested two for an experimental installation of the 12.8cm Rheinmetall K based on the 12.8cm FlaK. This heavy anti-tank gun had been ordered as early as 1939 (as development of the FlaK version had commenced in 1936). As with the 10.5cm K18 auf Panzer Selbstfahrlafette IVa this vehicle would have been an extremely powerful weapon had it been produced in quantity. Even if the Henschel VK3001 hull was not used, the ability to field a heavy Panzerjäger mounting a 12.8cm gun in 1942 raises some interesting questions. Again the overall shape of this vehicle foreshadows later Panzerjäger developments.

One of the two 12.8cm Sf L/61 was captured intact by Soviet troops late in 1943. This vehicle had 22 victory rings on the barrel.
